Grieving for Someone You Love

Grief is the natural response to losing someone or something precious. Whether it is the death of a loved one, the loss of health, a relationship, employment, or financial security, every loss changes us. While some recover more quickly, others experience deep sorrow and despair. Yet, although grief is part of every human life, few of us have been taught how to grieve well.

In today’s fast-paced world, we often avoid talking about pain and loss. We are encouraged to stay busy, be strong, and move on. But grief cannot be rushed. Unlike the movies, where sadness fades within moments, real grief takes time. Healing comes gently, one step at a time. The death of a spouse, child, parent, sibling, or close friend can leave an emptiness that words cannot express. Albert György’s sculpture Melancholy beautifully portrays this reality—a solitary figure with a hollow space where his heart once felt whole. It reminds us that grief is the painful price of deep love.

Grief touches every part of our lives—emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually. It is not a straight path but a journey with many ups and downs. There is no “right way” to grieve. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross described grief in five stages—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—but each person’s journey is unique.

Why do we grieve? Because we have loved. As Queen Elizabeth II wisely said, “Grief is the price we pay for love.” The good news is that grief does not have the final word. With the support of family, friends, faith, counselling, and grief support groups, healing is possible. Although life may never be the same, it can become meaningful again. We do not move on from our loved ones—we learn to move forward while carrying their love in our hearts.

If you are grieving the loss of someone you love, you do not have to walk this journey alone.

The SFX Grief Ministry warmly invites you to join our 14-week SFX Grief Support Program. In a safe, caring, and faith-filled environment, you will find understanding, encouragement, hope, and practical tools to help you rebuild your life.

The programme is open to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one, including a spouse, parent, child, sibling, relative, or close friend.
