Upskilling SFX Parish With First-Aid Training
The SFX Medical Team organized a First-Aid Training workshop on Saturday, 11 November 2023. The half-day workshop was attended by parishioners and volunteers from SFX Hospitality Ministry, Golden Seniors, Sunday Fellowship, as well as Life Teen.
Led by medical team volunteer Rusmary Alphonse, the participants learnt about the definition and objectives of first aid – which is to render immediate help before the arrival of medical personnel in order to preserve life, prevent complications and promote recovery.
First aid is what we term immediate medical assistance offered to any ill or injured person, irrespective of the severity of the illness, to save a person’s life till medical help or ambulance arrives. This is critical to prevent the situation from getting worse and to assist the injured person in recovering quickly.
Rusmary explained the basic steps in first aid and what to do in the event of various situations like fainting, choking, heart attack, cardiac arrest, burns and musculoskeletal injuries. Participants were given hands-on practice on lifting techniques, turning an unconscious person over, performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), removing choking hazard in the throat and how to use a triangle bandage on the arm.
The participants found the training informative and felt more confident using their senses to observe an injured parishioner’s initial condition and rendering first aid before the arrival of medical personnel or sending a patient to the hospital.
A key learning was that EVERYONE can and should learn first aid. It is not just for doctors, nurses and medical practitioners. Knowing first aid can save the lives of fellow parishioners and family members in and outside of church.
To build upon basic first aid knowledge, the SFX Medical Team will be organising a CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training session on Saturday, 16 December 2023. The training is scheduled to coincide with the recent installation of AED devices in SFX and to ensure as many parishioners are briefed on how to operate the live-saving medical device during medical emergencies. As such, participation is highly encouraged!
CPR and AED could save the life of your loved ones!
