SS2 - St Michael
About BEC SS2 St Michael, Church of St Francis Xavier, Petaling Jaya.
SS2 St Michael BEC
St Michael BEC was born out of a bigger SS2 BEC group covering then the entire SS2 area in PJ which was fairly large. The original SS2 BEC, which was already active in building a community of Catholics on a grassroots level, eventually split into 3 smaller BECs in 1987– the other two being St Anne and St John.
Doyen of the group, Aloysius Goh, proposed naming our BEC after St Michael the Archangel, Defender of the Faith and Protector of the Church, to reflect our mission of staying true to the values and practices of Catholicism.
Regular activities are organised by a core team of lay leaders, led by a chief coordinator. Some of our activities include:
- Monthly reflection sessions, often marked by enthusiastic sharing of views, knowledge and experiences.
- Weekly Rosary prayers in May and October for Marian devotions.
- Old newspaper collection and sale in alternate months, with proceeds channelled to charities and the needy; members also take turns to sponsor breakfast, turning this into a fellowship event as well.
- Regular collection of donations for the SFX Mobile Food Bank.
- Participation in, and helping to lead, seven-night prayers for the dearly departed within our BEC and for those who approach us for assistance.
- Annual Home BEC Mass;
- Special gatherings for Christmas, the Lunar New Year and other festive occasions.
- Sharing information on religious and church activities via our active WhatsApp chat group.
We have also conducted Enthronement of the Bible sessions at BEC homes.
Along with the other BECs of SFX PJ, St Michael BEC also contributes to the pool of Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Hospitality Ministers serving our Church.
