IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY

Finding God in all things

A Summary of Ignatian Spirituality

“Ignatian spirituality is based on the life and experience of St. Ignatius of Loyola, a 16th century Basque saint and soldier, whose profound conversion came after a cannonball shattered his knee while in battle. Ignatian spirituality shows you the way to God and is a spirituality for everyday life. It insists that God is present in our world and active in our lives.

Ignatian spirituality is a pathway to deeper prayer, good decisions guided by keen discernment, and an active life of service to others. It challenges us to encounter God in all things, witnessing to the joy of the Gospel.

We go forth into the world as contemplatives in action…women and men for and with others, hearing both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor – and responding. And we do it all for the greater glory of God.”

Ignatian Spirituality Programmes in SFX, PJ

The first Ignatian Spirituality & Prayer Program in SFX was held from March to September 2019. Its purpose was to introduce participants to the fundamentals of Ignatian Spirituality and to inspire them to a more resolute life of prayer. Many graces were experienced by participants as they delved deeper into the meditative prayer methods of Lectio Divina, Ignatian Contemplation, and the Consciousness Examen. The program included two optional pilgrimages to the Ignatian sites in Spain and Xaverian sites in Melaka. It ended with a week of guided prayer by Sojourners’ Companions, followed by a retreat.

The second Ignatian Spirituality and Prayer Program commenced in January 2020 and was subsequently held via virtual sessions due to the pandemic lockdown.

A key aim of these ISP programs is to gradually develop participants into contemplatives in action, serving as discerning men and women within their families, communities, and the church.

Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAP) – a worldwide Jesuit focus

There are four UAP areas of focus, the first of which is “To Show Everyone the Way to God”. This first UAP can be done by promoting discernment and charisms that are rooted in Ignatian Spirituality. Details of the other three areas may be found under the relevant sections.

As part of the UAP launch in SFX PJ on 31st July 2021, three informative sessions were held on Ignatian Spirituality on 1st, 8th and 15th August:
