Prison Ministry
Prison Ministry is an Archdiocese Ministry comprising of volunteers from 13 Catholic churches including St Francis Xavier Church. It is necessarily so because prisons are centralised and there are laws to be followed as it involves prisons which are governed by a statutory body under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Archdiocese has established an organisation registered with the Registrar of Societies that regulates the activities of the Catholic Prison Ministry. The organisation is the CATHOLIC PRISON FELLOWSHIP ASSOCIATION.
The work of the prison ministry is visiting prisoners. For this work, an Induction Course is conducted by the Archdiocese to train the volunteer and help him/her discern, after which a permit is applied for by the Archdiocese on behalf of each volunteer.
Visiting schedules are drawn up by the Archdiocese on behalf of all 13 churches in agreement with prison authorities.
The work of prison ministry is vital in bringing healing to the least and the fallen who live in darkness. Volunteers provide prisoners with the free Catholic scripture, faith, and prayer resources they need to establish their relationship with God.
Dedicated volunteers bring the Word of God and the sacraments of the Catholic Church to men, women and juveniles who are incarcerated.
They share the transforming love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ to impact the hearts and lives of incarcerated men, women, and youth, as well as their families, to become loving and productive citizens of their communities.
