Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) are lay members of the Catholic Church who are appointed to assist in distributing Holy Communion during Mass or to bring the Eucharist to the sick and homebound when ordinary ministers are unavailable.
In the Catholic Church , the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are bishops, priests, and deacons. However, when there is a genuine pastoral need—such as a large congregation or limited clergy—trained laypersons may be commissioned as extraordinary ministers to serve the faithful.
The role of an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion is both a privilege and a responsibility. They are called to demonstrate reverence for the Eucharist, live a life consistent with Christian values, and serve with humility and devotion. Their ministry supports the Church’s mission by ensuring that the faithful, especially the sick and elderly, can receive the Body and Blood of Christ.
This ministry highlights the spirit of service within the Church, where laypeople actively participate in supporting the liturgical life and caring for the community.
